The Fostering Sustainable Business Program:
The Fostering Sustainable Business Practices program aims to support businesses, organizations and institutions in their desire to improve their bottom line by developing more sustainable environmental, social and economically viable business practices. This innovative new program hopes to break down barriers to developing sustainable practices and encourage businesses and the larger community to foster more sustainable approaches.

Program Background
Peterborough Green-Up is a community-based, non-profit organization whose mission is “to enhance environmental health in the Peterborough region by interpreting environmental concerns, facilitating positive action and providing services recognized as valuable by the community.” Over Green-Up’s 15 years, Green-Up has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards and has an impressive track record with thousands of residents who have participated in programs that cover energy efficiency; air quality education (climate change and transportation); water quality and conservation; waste management; greenspace enhancement; and environmental education.

In recent years, the environment has become the number one concern of Canadians. Both the citizens of Peterborough and tourists who visit the city and patronize local businesses increasingly come to expect more environmental and social responsibility from community leaders. Over the past years an unprecedented number of local businesses, organizations and institutions as well as residents and tourists have contacted Peterborough Green-Up searching for assistance, resources and options that embrace the ideas and principles of “Green Business.” This new reality led to the creation of the Fostering Sustainable Business Practices (FSBP) program to support businesses, organizations and institutions in their desire to improve their triple bottom line - environmental, economic and social sustainability.

Since its launch in 2007, businesses leaders and community members in the Greater Peterborough Area have come to respect and rely on the information, resources and support that the FSBP program provides. This has become increasingly important for small to medium size enterprises that are struggling to meet new standards and remain competitive but do not have the in-house expertise to meet these new realities of the business world. As a non-profit organization, the FSBP program is able to provide vital information and education that is often inaccessible to those who need it most. Our program offers business leaders the ability to identify barriers to economic growth and strategies to overcome those challenges.  We offer businesses an opportunity to better access cutting-edge technologies to improve eco-efficiency and pursue economic growth that supports the integrity of rural communities and is sustainable in the long-term.
